Choosing a network partner for your strategy in Asia

To compete in Asia, you need network strength delivered by a partner with expertise in the region. Here's how to choose the right network partner to support your regional ambitions.

Asia beats with a digital heart and while an effective digital strategy is a prerequisite for success in the region, but due to its varying network infrastructure, it’s important to find the right provider to facilitate your growth.

Gartner’s 2018 Critical Capabilities for Network Services, Asia/Pacific report is an invaluable starting point for organisations who need to make informed decisions about their network options in Asia Pacific.

Analysing the 13 largest network providers in the region, Gartner noted that despite considerable interest in network modernisation, network providers’ “capabilities and experience” still “differ significantly”.

This is particularly prevalent in emerging markets such as the Philippines, Vietnam and parts of the Indonesian archipelago. Additionally, network technologies such as SD-WAN and programmable networking such as the Telstra Programmable Network, remain key differentiators for organisations seeking to leverage their efficiencies.

Within the report, Gartner classifies providers according to their ability to meet the needs of mid-sized enterprises, larger enterprises operating throughout the region, and those who require High-Performance Networking – distinguished by low latency connections, network function virtualisation and their reliability at scale.

To understand which use case your organisation fits in, it’s important to take stock of your networking requirements.

Does your organisation need access to just key business hubs such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai, or do you need a network provider who can supply connectivity into Malaysia?  Do you have more demanding requirements in India, China and Indonesia?

The Gartner report makes it simple to understand which providers are most able to meet the needs of enterprise networking throughout the region.

Different providers are also better suited to meet the needs of different use cases. While reliability is a chief concern for most organisations, content providers have very different bandwidth needs compared to financial institutions that prioritise low-latency connections to support trading.

Support and experience for SD-WAN and programmable networking, are particularly important for expanding retail organisations, who need to rapidly provision new branches and manage varying demand.

Direct connections to cloud services such as AWS are another key differentiator, for example organisations who increasingly move more of their ICT stack into virtualised environments, are placing a premium on speed and reliability.

In addition to direct cloud connectivity, a network provider’s expertise in public and private cloud management should be an important factor in decision making, as data sovereignty laws in key APAC markets including China and Indonesia can present a challenge unless properly considered.
